Keep Killer Robots Fiction

Killer Robots have been a fixture of science fiction for decades but now they are becoming a very real possibility.

The Canadian Campaign to Stop Killer Robots works for a ban on fully autonomous weapons (robotic weapons that can choose and fire on targets without any human intervention unlike drones that continue to have a human at the controls from a remote location).  We believe that the creation of fully autonomous weapons is a line that should not be crossed.  We are calling for a pre-emptive and comprehensive ban on the development, production, and use of fully autonomous weapons.  The prohibition should be achieved through Canadian national law and an international treaty.

The Canadian Campaign to Stop Killer Robots has multiple moral, ethical, legal, technical and policy concerns with the prospect of fully autonomous weapons. It believes that humans should not delegate the responsibility of making lethal decisions in conflict to machines. The development of fully autonomous weapons and the associated risks to civilians are an affront to Canadian values of humanitarianism, personal responsibility, peace, order and good governance.

I find the idea of machines making life or death decisions in conflict abhorrent. I call on the Government of Canada to immediately prohibit the development and deployment of fully autonomous weapons (killer robots) in Canada and to support efforts to create a pre-emptive global ban on the technology.

Canada used to be a leader in international disarmament efforts and should be again—this is one way to do so.

This method won’t save lives except in video games!

Letting fully autonomous weapons become real is a sincerely stupid idea. If movies like Terminator are not a lesson, than simply look at all the real examples of technology that were invented “for good reasons” that have been hacked, adapted, and perverted to illegal, or violent actions. Then ask yourself, is anything built by mankind ever really altruistic in use? Building a system designed to KILL humans independently without another human watching over the system, is sheer folly. You remember Windows Vista right? Now tell me it won’t fail, breakdown, or even have an error. NO NO NO!!!

We need to find peaceful ways to resolve conflicts. Killer Robots are a bad idea that could lead to a great deal of harm or worse. to escalation of small conflicts into full blow wars.

Spend the resources on developing mediation techniques and skills and other creative ways to resolve conflicts so that all parties feel their needs have been met!!!

WE CAN RESOLVE CONFLICTS NON-VIOLENTLY.

Drones are bad enough and these seem an excuse to kill with impunity. At this time people are usually hesitant to kill; but if using a remote machine soldiers and especially leaders would probably feel little guilt .

e must achieve a total ban on this nightmarish development. One has to ask, “how did humanity invest in such killing machines when all spiritual traditions and moral systems find this abhorrent.”

When will we wake up and realize that humanity needs to focus on surviving and that this is going to take empathy, compassion, cooperation and intelligence. We can no longer afford to waste any time, energy or finances focusing on the development of weaponry of any kind.

The world has become enchanted with “war at a distance”…e.g. drones. Robot soldiers cannot be endowed with moral ability to assess situations. Shoot first, but never ask questions. Not a judicial policy to stand behind. Let’s unite in keeping warfare combined to real people speaking together to resolve differences. Thank you.

Canada should take the lead in taking to an international level the opposition to this development of robotic weapons.

Wars are a terrible tragedy for everyone involved. If you truley want to stop wars, instead of making heartless killing machines, simply pass a law that says that ONLY the 2 leaders of the warring countries have to meet in an empty field and fight in hand to hand combat to the death. The one left alive wins. That would put a stop to all war once and for all .

I am a Canadian citizen, formerly living in Toronto.

We can see how drones have caused deaths amongst innocent civilians, generating rage against the user nation. Robots would have to be programmed to carry out attacks and would be subject to the same errors.

Not to mention the danger of them getting into the wrong hands.

It is crucial to act immediately to prohibit the development of fully autonomous weapons.
